Iceland: what’s useful on the route

Season – from mid-May to mid-September. It is at this time that the greatest chances to see whales

Dressing is like our April: take a demi-season hooded jacket, t-shirts, and a set of lightweight thermal underwear. From shoes – reliable waterproof sneakers, preferably two pairs. If you are going to engage in trekking – take trekking boots. Fleece cap and lightweight gloves will not be superfluous.

Route
There are two classic options for traveling around Iceland.

The first “Golden Ring”
You live in Reykjavik and travel radially to watch Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall and Heikadalur Valley of Geysers. Everything can be seen in a day, if very quickly.

Ideally, you need three days – and then other beautiful places will be added, including the Blue Lagoon.

The second is a full ring
Ring on the island along the main road number 1. Then to the usual “Golden Ring” will be added the Black beaches of Vika, the Ice Lagoon Yokulsaurlon, the fjords, the Eyyafyatlayokudl volcano (yes, learn to say this name on one exhalation), Skogafoss waterfalls, Seljalandfoss, Dethyfoss, Godafoss, Gyfossfoss, Falls. Lake Myvatn, Husavik with whales and much more!

Transport
Public transport is not developed. The bus can travel once a day. Or two days.

Hitchhiking – more real chances to move around the country. But, again, in parts of the island outside the Golden Ring, there are much fewer cars.

Renting a car is the right decision: along the route No. 1, a passenger car is quite enough.

Accommodation
All accommodation is also best to book very in advance, for six months – you will not miss. A month before the summer trip, only the most expensive hotels and guesthouses can stay.

This does not concern the story if you take a tent with you: there will always be a place in the campsites. There are a lot of campgrounds, with shared kitchens, showers, all dishes, washing machines, etc.

If you want to save money, then on arrival in Reykjavik I advise you to settle down (or drop in) in the City hostel Reykjavik. What for? There is an information center for travelers – like a hub. There are a lot of free maps, products that travelers leave, karemats, gas bottles, etc., and everything can be taken on the road absolutely free.

In turn, and on the day when you yourself fly home, everything that is not needed can already be left here too – for the next travelers.

We stocked up on gas, jams, cereals, bread, butter, a block of beer and other trifles. And they left karemats, trekking shoes (after a minute my shoes were already on the British beauty), the remnants of food, blankets and something else.

Whale hypothetically can be seen on a boat trip in Reykjavik. But in order to see the whales 100%, you have to go north – to Akureyri, and even better – to Husavik!

In Husavik there is an open bay, not of the fjord type, therefore it is much closer to the whales themselves. It costs about 70 euros, and you can buy tickets on the spot at the pier. Go to sea all sutra and before lunch. On the boat give superwarm overalls and cocoa).

There is a speedboat tour, you can swim directly to the whale! It costs about 140 euros.

All summer night is light. Feels like – as soon as the sunset begins. Therefore, be sure to take a sleep mask, very tight and proven. We did not take – and the first couple of nights it was a real quest: turn off the brain and fall asleep!
